Broodstock Offerings
ABC offers selectively bred diploid and tetraploid eastern oyster broodstock developed for traits including growth, survival, disease tolerance, and performance in different environmental conditions.
ABC Selective Breeding Lines (Broodstock Program)
ABC produces a variety of genetically distinct broodstock, known as “Lines” for distribution to commercial hatcheries. Each line is created and maintained through the process of selective breeding to support traits that are important to commercial oyster farmers. These include disease resistance or disease tolerance, fast growth, and higher meat yield. Because no single line is ideal for every growing environment, understanding how each line was developed and the conditions it was selected under can help hatcheries and growers choose the best broodstock for their operation. We recommend to try more than one line on your farm and see what works best for your growing environment.
With regards to selection for disease resistance or disease tolerance, ABC's moderate selection sites annually experience Dermo but have variable exposure to MSX. None of these locations experience SSO or JOD, therefore, we do not know how our lines will perform in locations where these diseases are a concern.
Below is a brief summary of the key characteristics of each line. Click on the line name to learn more details about its history, selection goals, and where these lines might be best suited for.
Diploid (2N) Lines
- DEBY: A dependable, long-established line originating from Delaware Bay, selected under moderate salinity (average 18-23ppt) for disease resistance, growth, and survival.
- LOLA: A proven low-salinity line originating from Louisiana stock that has been selected for exceptional survival and growth in low salinity environments (average 8-13ppt) with naturally low disease pressure.
- XB: A genetically distinct moderate-salinity (average 18-23ppt) line made with stocks sourced from Delaware Bay, Louisiana and Virginia, this line offers another strong option for disease-prone growing areas. **Note, XB is currently only available in small quantities and requests must be made in the fall to receive**
- HNRY: ABC's cutting-edge family-selected diploid line, updated annually to capture the latest genetic improvements in survival, growth, meat yield and shell shape - for moderate salinity environments (average 18-23ppt).
- LILY: The low-salinity (8-13ppt), family-selected counterpart to HNRY, combining rapid genetic improvement in survival, growth, meat yield and shell shape, with adaptation to low-salinity environments (low to no disease pressure).
Tetraploid (4N) Lines
- 4NGN: ABC's genetically diverse foundation tetraploid line for dependable triploid production.
- 4FYR: ABC's elite family-selected tetraploid line, designed to maximize the performance of commercial triploid offspring with selection specifically on growth and survival.
